Booth 9

Wunika Mukan Gallery is pleased to return for the 8th edition of Art X Lagos with the solo presentation of new paintings by Nigerian artist, Adulphina Imuede. Through this exhibition, the gallery aims to showcase a definitive and uniquely recognizable identity through the artists central themes of self, femininity and self-awareness.

Born in 1992, Adulphina Imuede is a Nigerian artist whose artistic journey was deeply influenced by the profound love she discovered for drawing and art, which provided her with a deep sense of safety and inner peace. In her early childhood, her family relocated to Lagos, a move necessitated by her father’s service in the Nigerian Army. Imuede’s early exposure to the discipline of a strict family encouraged her interest in drawing as a means of expressing unspoken emotions and desires.

Her formal education culminated in a degree in painting from the University of Lagos in 2016. Following this, in 2018, she became a part of the For Creative Girls platform's 2018 cohort, working under the mentorship of Data Oruwari. This mentorship period marked a significant phase in her artistic growth, where she sought to expand her practice beyond the constraints of available space and delve into more personal themes in her work.

Imuede's artistic journey has since transformed into a celebration of self-awareness, a reflection of her personal voice, and an exploration of layers of identity. She employs a diverse array of mediums, including ink, watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, acrylics, and chalk pastels on paper, as well as acrylic on canvas. Through her art, Adulphina Imuede reveals the concealed facets of African history and embraces a profound sense of purpose that resonates deeply within her work.

The Wunika Mukan Gallery booth explores the exhibiting artists' journey of discovering and rediscovering ‘self’. This immersive experience serves as a vibrant platform for the expression of freedom and the unbridled emotions that art evokes. The exhibition represents the gallery's interest in promoting and positioning established and emerging artists within the contemporary art framework.
